How Iโ€™ve Learned to Tolerate Tasks That I Donโ€™t Like

Household chores are something that Iโ€™ve always had a love-hate relationship with.  I love the end result, but I hate the process to get there.  A clean, comfortable, organized home is always the goal, but the work involved is too much!  Since chores and other tasks are a part of life (unless you hire help which Iโ€™m not opposed to), Iโ€™ve tried to find ways to make them somewhat enjoyable.  Here are a few tips on how to make certain tasks more tolerable.

1/ Use good tools that work and speed up the process

This is one of the best things you can do- figure out a way to make the tasks move along faster.  For example, if cooking isnโ€™t your thing but you still have to do it, use an instant pot or air fryer to make the process from prep to table much faster.  Also, something as simple as using sharp knives will make cutting faster which in turn makes the process faster.

Another example is for chores such as cleaning the bathroom.  I started using an automatic cleaning brush for the bathroom, and it has also made the job much faster.  Also, using a daily shower spray will help to keep the shower cleaner so when itโ€™s time to actually clean it there wonโ€™t be as much to clean away.  Simple things like these will make a job complete much faster and easier.

2/ Use aesthetically pleasing tools

Maybe itโ€™s just me, but when I have kitchen tools that are aesthetically pleasing, it makes me want to use them and I look forward to cooking.  Using cookware that matches your kitchen aesthetic, eating from matching dining sets, etc. can elevate the process and make it more enjoyable.  For example, I recently purchased a cookware set that had the color scheme for my other kitchen tools, and Iโ€™ve felt more excited to cook.  Cooking isnโ€™t my favorite thing in the world, but it has been more pleasant with the pretty tools.  Itโ€™s important to make sure the pretty tools actually work though, because sometimes something looks nice but doesnโ€™t do a good job at the task at hand.  Do your research, but when you find something that looks beautiful and does the job well, thatโ€™s golden!

3/ Listen to music (or make playlists for certain activities)

Music always helps to make a task more enjoyable.  Maybe itโ€™s because you go into auto-pilot on the task and are paying more attention to the music.  Maybe itโ€™s because music can make you happy, so hearing your favorite songs masks the work that youโ€™re doing.  I like to listen to certain kinds of music for certain tasks.  For example, while making my morning latte, I like to listen to Bossa Nova/Samba, while cooking dinner I listen to Alt R&B, while cleaning the kitchen during the week I listen to old school R&B, and on the weekends when Iโ€™m cleaning, I listen to 90โ€™s R&B and Hip Hop (need to have faster music to clean to!).  You could also make a playlist for certain tasks that just feels right to you.

4/ Make a favorite beverage before getting started

I like to make a latte before I get started with my household cleaning tasks because I need a pick-me-up, but also I look forward to the drink and love the routine that I have created around it. It helps to get me in the right mindset as I sit and think about the day ahead and things that I plan to do.  Thinking and planning over a cup of coffee just feels right.

You may want to skip the coffee and make a glass of wine before starting your tasks.  Hey, no judgement here!  Sometimes cooking while drinking a glass of wine is so relaxing and makes the whole experience more enjoyable.  Whatever it is you decide to pour, incorporate it into your task times so you can have a routine to look forward to.

5/ โ€œRomanticizeโ€ your life

Try to make every moment as special as you can.  For example, even if youโ€™re working remote, wear jewelry, spray on perfume, do your eyebrows, etc.  Do it for yourself, not for anyone else; it just adds an extra special aspect to your day and tasks so you can enjoy them (or at least tolerate them) a little more.  When you make your bed, prep it like a nice hotel bed with a tray and your favorite nighttime items on it.  Or before cleaning your living room, pick out a candle that you will burn once the cleaning is done.  The candle in a freshly cleaned room is the icing on the cake!  Think of some of your favorite ways to romanticize your life and incorporate them into your to-do list.

"Tyler, The Creator" Your Business in 7 Lyrics

Music is one of my favorite things in life.  Iโ€™ve created playlists for nearly everything I do, and when I want to get into a certain mindset I know a song to get me there.  Iโ€™m a production person first, so I listen to the instruments and melodies first and if it catches my attention, I listen to the lyrics a little more closely.  Oftentimes, I hear a lyric and get motivated for business.  โ€œTyler, The Creatorโ€ is one of my favorite artists, so today I will be sharing 7 of my favorite lyrics of his that can help to give an extra boost of motivation in your business.

1/ Track: DOGTOOTH

Lyric: โ€œIโ€™m tryna buy my neighbors house and turn it to a yardโ€

To me, the theme of this lyric is vision and planning. Having a vision and plan in place for your business will get you far, and your goals can be as extravagant or conservative as youโ€™d like.

2/ Track: Pothole

Lyric: โ€œI got too much drive donโ€™t wanna steer off path and crash and get distractedโ€

With a specific goal in mind, we try to stay hyper focused on accomplishing it.  Itโ€™s easy to get distracted with new and shiny objects (ex: a new social media platform, jumping from strategy to strategy for Reels, etc.), but itโ€™s important to stick to your plan and try to keep the distractions at bay.

3/ Track: What a Day

Lyric: โ€œI am a workaholic, and I need to get me some restโ€

Itโ€™s important to put your all into what you do for your business, but itโ€™s equally if not more important to get the rest you need.  Your body and brain need to rest to create more brain cells for you to think of more great ideas!  This is one of my struggles as well.

4/ Track: Castaway (a feature on the album Rouge by Yuna)

Lyric: โ€œChange of direction and now Iโ€™m flyinโ€™ to the doorโ€

Sometimes we pivot and thatโ€™s okay.  Oftentimes a pivot is what is needed to get your head back in the game, so itโ€™s like you have a new found love for your business with a little change.

5/ Track: Glitter

Lyric: โ€œThey ainโ€™t build me up so I block โ€˜em like Legoโ€

Itโ€™s important to surround yourself with people that are there for you when you need them and that support you, but itโ€™s also important to follow people on social media that will bring you joy, not bring you down.  This goes for accounts that post about things that arenโ€™t helpful or positive, and even accounts that may be just fine but make YOU feel bad (i.e. imposter syndrome).  The block feature is great for tailoring your feed to only show you accounts that lift you up, encourage and motivate you.  This goes for your associates as well.

6/ Track: Hot Wind Blows

Lyric: โ€œYou see these excursions right here? Just too lavish to post on the โ€˜Gramโ€

Everything isnโ€™t meant to be done in or shared with the public eye.  Some aspects and pieces of your business journey should be kept close to you.  Everything doesnโ€™t need to be shared with everybody, and everything doesnโ€™t need to be shared all the time.  Break away from social media and work on your business.  Moving in silence is something good to incorporate into your business from time to time.

7/ Track: Enjoy right now, today

Lyric: There are no lyrics to this track- itโ€™s instrumental...but the title says it all!

Itโ€™s important to see into the future of your business, but itโ€™s also important to celebrate your small wins in the present.  The small wins are what will fuel you to keep going and get you where you are aiming to be, so take joy in the now as well!

Bonus Gem!

Another inspiring tidbit is that Tyler, the Creator also owns two apparel lines that are quite popular called Golf Wang and Golf le FLEUR, and is the founder of the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival.  Heโ€™s not using music as his only source of income, he has also created other businesses to diversify and expand his reach.  Multiple streams of income are a great thing for business owners to incorporate when the time is right.
