Music is one of my favorite things in life. I’ve created playlists for nearly everything I do, and when I want to get into a certain mindset I know a song to get me there. I’m a production person first, so I listen to the instruments and melodies first and if it catches my attention, I listen to the lyrics a little more closely. Oftentimes, I hear a lyric and get motivated for business. “Tyler, The Creator” is one of my favorite artists, so today I will be sharing 7 of my favorite lyrics of his that can help to give an extra boost of motivation in your business.
1/ Track: DOGTOOTH
Lyric: “I’m tryna buy my neighbors house and turn it to a yard”
To me, the theme of this lyric is vision and planning. Having a vision and plan in place for your business will get you far, and your goals can be as extravagant or conservative as you’d like.
2/ Track: Pothole
Lyric: “I got too much drive don’t wanna steer off path and crash and get distracted”
With a specific goal in mind, we try to stay hyper focused on accomplishing it. It’s easy to get distracted with new and shiny objects (ex: a new social media platform, jumping from strategy to strategy for Reels, etc.), but it’s important to stick to your plan and try to keep the distractions at bay.
3/ Track: What a Day
Lyric: “I am a workaholic, and I need to get me some rest”
It’s important to put your all into what you do for your business, but it’s equally if not more important to get the rest you need. Your body and brain need to rest to create more brain cells for you to think of more great ideas! This is one of my struggles as well.
4/ Track: Castaway (a feature on the album Rouge by Yuna)
Lyric: “Change of direction and now I’m flyin’ to the door”
Sometimes we pivot and that’s okay. Oftentimes a pivot is what is needed to get your head back in the game, so it’s like you have a new found love for your business with a little change.
5/ Track: Glitter
Lyric: “They ain’t build me up so I block ‘em like Lego”
It’s important to surround yourself with people that are there for you when you need them and that support you, but it’s also important to follow people on social media that will bring you joy, not bring you down. This goes for accounts that post about things that aren’t helpful or positive, and even accounts that may be just fine but make YOU feel bad (i.e. imposter syndrome). The block feature is great for tailoring your feed to only show you accounts that lift you up, encourage and motivate you. This goes for your associates as well.
6/ Track: Hot Wind Blows
Lyric: “You see these excursions right here? Just too lavish to post on the ‘Gram”
Everything isn’t meant to be done in or shared with the public eye. Some aspects and pieces of your business journey should be kept close to you. Everything doesn’t need to be shared with everybody, and everything doesn’t need to be shared all the time. Break away from social media and work on your business. Moving in silence is something good to incorporate into your business from time to time.
7/ Track: Enjoy right now, today
Lyric: There are no lyrics to this track- it’s instrumental...but the title says it all!
It’s important to see into the future of your business, but it’s also important to celebrate your small wins in the present. The small wins are what will fuel you to keep going and get you where you are aiming to be, so take joy in the now as well!
Bonus Gem!
Another inspiring tidbit is that Tyler, the Creator also owns two apparel lines that are quite popular called Golf Wang and Golf le FLEUR, and is the founder of the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival. He’s not using music as his only source of income, he has also created other businesses to diversify and expand his reach. Multiple streams of income are a great thing for business owners to incorporate when the time is right.
